Last occupants of house were very messy in their painting jobs.

Have got paint on my wooden front door and its frame.

Looking for the best way to remove it without damaging wood itself?

Can I just use turps?

Do you mean something like weather shield exterior paint splashed on to the door or is it inside, Sorry if I am not understanding correctly.

No its actually inside - in the front porch.

Its a wooden door and frame. When they were painting the walls, ceilings etc around the door they got paint on it. Generally a messy job. Some sitting in little lumps, some smeared where they obviously wiped it as it was wet and its now just a stain on the wood.

Will paint remover do any harm to the wood if I use it?

I cleaned down a whole wooden stairs using paint remover, no harm done at all. But is the door varnished/painted? If you just strip a patch, you might see a colour variation on it, and so you might be better doing the whole door & frame at the same time.

No, the door and frame are not varnished/painted (well the front of the door is, the outside).

In fact, typical of the previous owners, the door is a bit rough and looks like it could be doing with a good cleaning and a little TLC. So I was planning to treat it with whatever is needed, be it oil or varnish or ..

Just sand all of the paint off with heavy sand paper or if too thick use a blade knife from a local discount store if needs be, and go over the whole of the door and frame with a light sand paper, Wipe it down with a cloth and varnish over.

You might find Nitromors will help, I used it and found it great. I used it and then a fine sandpaper to get rid of the awkward bits that went into the grain.

If the wood was previously unpainted/varnished, some of the paint might be deep in the grain and be really hard to remove. Depending on the wood, I think oil is a really good option. I used Danish oil and love it's warm colour and easy of use. The downside is that you need to repeat it every yr. But it takes only a few minutes with a rag, so that's not a problem. But it might just be easier to paint, if the door is already painted.
