remortgage-- consolidating debts??

Help.. not sure if i am in the right forum. My husband and I are almost in our mid 50's and badly need to do some work on the house. My husband is self employed. we dont have a mortgage. We also need to change our car. Would we be better off to remortgage now and would we get tax relif on the repayments? we plan on borrowing around 40 thousand. thanks
 
You won't get tax relief on the loan for the car. You will get a lower interest rate by remortgaging. I guess I'd be asking questions about the how long it would take you to repay the debt, and are you comfortable that your income is going to be stable over that period? Do you have any income protection insurance in place?
