Registering for tax as an Uber Eats rider

Just been approved as a delivery rider for Uber Eats. Sure it's no great shakes as a job, but I can do it during lockdown and I see it as free money for getting some exercise.

I don't understand how to register for tax though. It's officially self-employment, so I thought I can't just declare it as a job but would have to register for income tax - is that right? My wife is in a PAYE job though, and the Revenue site says I can only register if I take over from her as the "assessable spouse". I won't realistically make more from Uber than she does in her job, and once lockdown is over I'll be looking to get a steady job myself.

Is there a way of doing Uber Eats for a month or two that isn't more hassle than it's worth?

Wouldn’t be a box issue to try for 1 month - how much typically do you expect to earn ? What will your expenses be ?

Earnings would depend on jobs coming up as soon as I finish the last one, or just now and then, but I think €20 per hour tops. Would be up to me when I want to go online and get given jobs. Basically no expenses other than water/energy drinks while I'm riding, and bike maintenance. I already have a bike and Uber arranges insurance.

I might be totally kidding myself, won't know until I try, but I've heard you can make that. Basically happy to give it a shot, I have nothing to lose, but I'll wait til the Revenue answers me back about how to declare it.

100 euro per night ?

It's really not that complicated. If your taxable non PAYE income is less than 5000 euro per year, just declare it in you and your spouse's joint tax return next year. It's a form 12 submitted via my account. It will take about 10 minutes.

Thanks, so my wife can do a form 12 covering my Uber work as part of our joint tax return? Or it still has to be an individual thing. Not used to joint taxation because we're from Scotland and it's all individual there.

If it turns out I do Uber for longer, and my earnings pass 5000, then I see we need form 11 instead.

In either case though, any forms or registration we need to do before I start work, or it's all sorted out at the end of the year?

Btw, never heard nixer before

If you are jointly assessed at the moment then it's a joint return by the assessable spouse. From a tax perspective there's nothing for you to right now unless the contract with Uber requires something like a tax clearance certificate or notification of tax registration.
Nixer seems to be an Irish phrase alright. Never heard it anywhere else.
