Advice welcome re refund delay using old UB Debit Card in error. I paid using BOI CC. When refunding I presented (in error) old UB Debit Card (acc closed since 2023 but card was still within date). Chasing retailer for funds. Refund should have been rejected at til because different card presented but receipt generated. Its clear what happened and its documented so funds are somewhere just not with me. If retailer difficult, any advice?

You can't use any card for all retailers. I presented a different card to the card reader at B&Q and was told it was the incorrect card.
I've also got cash refund on a card purchase from Aldi, so it depends on the retailer.

Thanks for replys. Retailer has produced proof of transaction/ ARN number. Their payment system states refund was successful. Im liasing with them so they understand refund was made using a debit card linked to an account that closed in 2023. Old UB support line Ulydian have agreed to send me a statement showing account linked to card closed. I’m just wondering who the authority is behind the card payment system in Ireland.

If the money has left the retailers account how can they be expected to sort it out? The money is clearly stuck in banking purgatory until someone unlocks it. It’s on you to chase this.

The money should eventually bounce back to the account it came from once it's rejected from the closed card account, the retailer will probably not refund for a second time until they get their first payment back. Retailer could possibly follow up with their bank as to where the rejected payment goes in case it is in some sort of suspense account but usually these type things just reroute back to originator, might take a little while though!

Thankyou, yes I suspect it will take time but with very strict transaction references numbers associated with card payments, it should be traceable.

Firstly you need to accept that this was your error.

Refund would not be rejected at the till as your card is in date and refunds don't need to check if funds are available. So zero error on behalf of the retailer.

The retailer will need to physically check their daily data to see when the refund bounces back.

Could be anywhere up to 7 days.

Give them time and be patient. If they get a lot of transactions, it can be time consuming especially as they will not get any specific email or written notifications.

And also get that ub card and cut it up.
