I have been accepted on one of the upskill courses.

I was recently made redundant in July and instead of signing on I took of for 2 months doing voluntary work.

I have never had to sign on before and do qualify for jobseekers allowance.

Went to my local social welfare office to sign on, and was told I did not qualify for the Labour activation fund as I need to be 3 months signing on.

Can I apply for the back to education grant?

Its a course I really want to do and being from outside dublin am going to need all the support I can get.

What are my chances of getting the BETA grant?

Thank you

The 'grant' is not a SW payment, it's doen by VECs. I think the closing date was last week.
If it's Back To Education Allowance you mean, then you would have to be on JB/JA for at least 9 months before qualifying.
I don't know what the 'Labour activation fund' but it's not any SW payment I've heard off.

Welfarite,
For info, here is the information on the Labour Market Activation Fund - it's a Back to College Initiative announced earlier in the summer.

Rainbow,
If you received statutory redundancy, you may be eligible for Back to Education Allowance as the 9 month rule won't be applied. From welfare.ie site...

Redundancy
If you are awarded statutory redundancy under Irish legislation, you can have immediate access to the BTEA. To qualify you must:
- Take part in the BTEA scheme within one year of getting statutory redundancy
- Be entitled to a qualifying social welfare payment before starting your course

College grant money is made available through such means as PELL grants and other grants and scholarships given by both government, public and private programs.
