Root canal work

Bid1, I had this done at my dentist here in Dublin (Miriam Kenny in Donnybrook, highly recommended). It was expensive enough, but I got 50% back on my BUPA/HSA plan and will get more back through tax relief....

Re: root canal

Hi,
I had root canal treatment last year and it cost 450 euros for a large number of visits. Eventually got a pin inserted into the dead tooth once the infection had calmed down. I defrayed the cost as I had VHI Healthsteps and got money back per visit, of which there were many.

I'm no dentist but I think the problem with going abroad is that as (if) it is due to an infection the dentist needs to go slowly and only fill the tooth when the infection is definitely gone. This can take a number of visits.

I also got extensive crown work done and that lends itself to going foreign, more so than root canal.

I'm afraid it's like some of the more dreadful plumbing problems. You need someone local and you may have to pay through the nose.

Best of luck,
Gearoid

Re: root canal

How much would root treatment and a crown cost in Ireland? and how much would the same treatment cost up north? Has anyone got a dentist to recommend up North from experience? I have some work that needs to be addressed but with an upcoming wedding I am not looking forward to the extra cost of the dental work on top of the wedding costs.

Re: root canal

I got a root canal and crown done with SDDS in Newry some years back, I can't remember the exact cost but was much much cheaper than the South. I think SDDS stands for South Down Dental Surgery and they were excellent.

Had root canal treatment done in Leixlip, (can't remember the surgery name, on the main st. near solicitors office) using intravenous sedation. Paid £80 for the sedation and £150 for the root canal treatment, (single root - double root is more expensive) As stated by previous posters - took a few visits, had it done in 1999 - no trouble since then and the tooth is still white and intact. The intravenous sedation was expensive, (at the time) but well worth the cash as I'm a nervous patient - don't remember a thing!

That was before our Zimbabwe-like inflation kicked in!
I had a root canal done by a guy called Barry McEniff in Rathmines.
It cost €600 and involved two visits...found him really good. Friendly and doesn't try and make extra from you by suggesting unnecessary work. In fact quite the opposite.

I had a crown and root canal treatment done last year. My dentist quoted me €1200, but I got it done in the Dental Hospital by a Dental student. It cost me about €430. No complaints.

Good that you have no complaints but it's not fair to compare the two.
One is qualified, the other is not.
