Recommend holiday with baby

Would anyone have any recommendations for a holiday with a baby just over 1 year?

Menorca or Formentera ..... they are much quieter than Mallorca and Ibiza and still have all the lovely sunshine and gorgeous beaches. I spent six months in Mallorca so I'm a great fan of the Balearics. A native Mallorcan friend of mine is currently teaching in a primary school in Formentera, and she thinks that of all the Balearic Islands (her own included!), Formentera is easily the most beautiful. Some Dutch people I know went there with their young kids and said it was very safe. There aren't too many hotels etc... so your best bet is to check the internet.

Generally, the best advice is to steer clear of the bigger resorts when you have young kids or babies. Also, don't try and do anything too adventurous.

Hi Vanilla,

Had you any particular spots in mind? Good hotel in Ireland with creche to take over responsibility and let you both have a break or go abroad?

I would definitely recommend Menorca for kids although IMHO it would be best to go when the weather is not too warm because it can be a bit of an endurance test with a 1 year old. Have seen many parents spend their entire holiday chasing kids around edge of swimming pools! The heat can also make them cranky if they're not used to it. :)

May and October are the best months to go to the Balearics as it's warm and sunny but not too hot.

If you are particularly worried about the heat, try somewhere like Brittany, maybe near Carnac. Great eateries and very reasonable prices.

Also, the Loire valley and the Vendee in France are good choices.

I for one would agree with Menorca and especially in May or late September not too hot and pleasantly quiet yet a good holiday atmosphere. Also Madeira can be very similar but a little dearer than normal, but worth the extra. Or for a new experience try Poland or Croatia both beautiful places but the cost of living is not that dear.

I'm not interested in holidaying in Ireland this year, I want to be guaranteed some sun shine as, apart from a family wedding and visits to other family members, I havent been on 'holiday' abroad for a couple of years now. I just dont want to have a long flight, and dont want to end up somewhere with lots of teenyboppers/discos/loud music etc...Oh yes, and I'd really like somewhere with nice restaurants as the whole food thing can make or break a holiday for me, which is why I'm uneasy about Croatia as have heard bad reports about the food. Apart from that I'm open minded.

Well Vanilla,

I think you should definitely look in to the following:

1. Menorca
2. Malta
3. Brittany
4. Loire Valley
5. Sicily
6. Sardinia
7. Corsica

Good food, nice sunshine and none of the 18 - 30 business you get in other places ;0)

I think Menorca is tops for young children. Buggies everywhere!! On the flight last summer, there were more children on board then adults! All the accomodation, bars, restaurants, etc. are all so child friendly. We have gone 3 times and would highly recommend it. All the resorts are great and as its such a small island, something like 30 miles by 40 miles approx. you can see it all easily by car even with a baby in tow. For a change we are going to Brittany this year so any advice welcome - staying just outside Lorient. Thanks.

Hi coininban1,

Have you had a read of this key post If it does not contain any info on Brittany perhaps you could post there about same. :)

Vanilla,

Menorca sounds like your best bet but you might well find it hard to get a holiday with good accommodation because it is a popular spot and some years ago when we went we had to book a year in advance. I would definitely agree with Leatherxxxx (that's a first!) about the May or September timescale and IMHO I would avoid Cala 'n Forcat because it is too commercialised.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat Cala Blanca has some nice restaurants especially the one in the cave.

With regard to Croatia I have heard that the food is very nice from work colleagues but, of course, the flight would be longer.

Perhaps these threads might be helpful:

Re: tips on staying in Brittany

I would check out whether or not there are any chateaux nearby that you could visit - some of them have amzing grounds where you can have picnics. Many of them also have small playground areas for kids near the picnic spots. There's nothing nicer on a summers day than eating fresh french bread with camembert while sitting on an immaculately manicured lawn and contemplating the architectural niceties of a chateau : )

architectural niceties?

Or contemplating the archtectural niceties of a bottle of plonk...thanks everyone.

Re: architectural niceties?

I love buildings, that's why I would be in contemplation of the chateau : )) But of course, there would be a bottle of nice wine close to hand - or maybe even some bubbly!

architechtural niceties

thanks sueellen, plenty of good links there for me to do the research!! The odd chateaux or deux and the bottle of something sound very good indeed! My kinda holiday!
