recommend colour for stairs/ skirting

Going to paint stairs, (not the steps which will have carpet). The hall is very small and quite dark so thinking of a white / off -white colour. But there are so many out there, can anyone recommend a particular colour for stairs / skirting etc. Want something 'clean' looking, some off-whites look a bit grubby IYKWIM. Or indeed any other colour suggestions would be welcome also.
 
There is a very nice off-white paint colour called gardenia. Very clean and bright but with a bit of depth.

It is one of the "trade" paints - a collection of paint colours used by the building trade. All paint shops do them, but no-one bothers advertising them much.

Ask in any paint shop for a sample of it, its a very nice off-white. I've used it for years, since a painter recommended it.
 
The gardenia has a bit more cream to it than the ivory lace which is more of a soft off-white colour.
