Received too much PAYE taxback from revenue

I applied to get my taxback recently (PAYE, etc) and was expecting maybe 500. I got a cheque for nearly 4000. Theres no way that right.
Moral dilemma. Do i ring them or do i say nothing?
Is it an inevitability that they find out. What would be the reprocussions?

Help!!! Thanks

Are you sure it's not right? Can you make sense of their calculations and see where it went wrong if it did. If it really is an error I would tell them.

Tell them before you spend it - at best their calculations are correct and you have a nice bonus.
At worst they are wrong, you need to give it back but you still have it!
Fingers crossed for the nice bonus though :)

Could there be a build up of refunds due from previous years. Don't spend it yet. If it's their error rest assured they'll come knocking sooner or later

Ya im positive it cant be from last year. Tiny chance it would be from last 4 years but on the page attached to cheque it just says 2011.
Ya i figure i have to ring them, im just trying to justify keeping it seeing as im penniless ;-)

Thanks.

Check the calculations then check them again Worh getting the opinion of an accountant It is rare enough for Revenue to make mistakes but it does happen from time to time

As in i literally only earned around 7000 last year, was on social welfare for few months before that. Ive earned 40000 other years previous to that but im pretty sure the cheque is regards 2011. Im just gona ring them there now, bye bye money :-(

I rang revenue, its owed back to them for sure. But they recommended i cash it and then wait for them to request back the difference (cos i am owed about 600 id say) That would be quicker than posting back the cheque. Personally i dont want it sitting in my account. Vegas anyone? Ha
I was asking on the phone if they would have noticed eventually and she was saying that they deifnately would have. Ah well id a few hours of dreaming!

Just as well you checked, then.

If you want a bit of revenge, when you send it back, send them the correct amount +1 cent. They'll have to send you another cheque for the 1c. that'll really annoy them...

They don't issue cheques for trivial amounts. Rounding differences etc are just written off.
