Reasonable painting quote?

I received a quote for painting the interior of my house. House is approx 1800sqft with high walls to paint in the upstairs hall and kitchen/diner.

The place was orignally painted white and all ceilings, doors, architrave and skirting is already done. The quote was just for painting walls with emulsion, and filling settling cracks in plaster.

I was told it would take 2 guys (professionals) 5 days to complete at 1000euro each, 600-700euro for materials and 800euro overhead/commision for the guy organising the job.
3500euro seems like an awful lot to me. I will get other quotes but does it sound reasonable? Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

This seems a lot to me... €1700 would not be bad! the 800 euro commission is a joke!

the more i think about it... i taught you were getting ceilings also... it should be less...

I had a paint job done a few months ago - was charged €125 per day (took 8 days). I bought the paint supplies - worked out at a few hundred euro. My house is 1200 sq ft. He was Polish.

Offer them €700 for the week, buy the paint supplies yourself and tell them to stick the commission.

If they don't like that, get someone else - there are plenty of people out there.

I agree. €800 'commission' is truly outrageous, as is the €700 for paint and materials. €200/day for painters is top of the range imo.

I think the man organising the job was foolish to tell you he wanted €800 for himself.

€2800 to paint a big house is not too bad but if it just walls I'd be inclined to haggle a little............or maybe a lot.
 
1000 a week, are these guys for real? painting is not a skilled job and should no way earn this kind of money. why nto do it urself over time? there is a great satisfaction to be had. tell them get lost for that money

There is no skill in slopping paint onto a wall, the skill comes from preping and getting the surface smooth and ready for paint.

I've seen many botched DIY paint jobs in my time, I work in the area of sash windows and most of my work is fixing stupid mistakes by DIY'ers (Destroy It Yourself).
 
believe you and me, most painters that you pay 1000 a week for wont do the right prep work either. no way in hell could they do it in a week if they did everything correctly i.e. filled all holes, sanded down EVERYTHING before painting. so if they are to do it in 5 days all they are doing is SLOPPING paint on a wall as u put it.
 
in a recession it sound quite expensive , remind him you are now calling the shots

Unfortunately there are a number of reasons that will prevent me from doing this myself but with prices like that the house will remain white until I can get a reasonable quote.

Most is not all, the remainder are real painters

When I said a painter I meant someone trained not a character who says he is a painter.

There is a difference!
 
indeed there is but a real painter who will prep every surface before he paints it would have no hope in doing this house properly in 5 days. no chance at all
 
I'm not a painter but any painter worth his salt will not work for a daily rate. The price quoted is high and if I were you I would look around.
Painting is a trade so it is skilled to say it's not is a bit unfair. There is more to painting than just throwing it on the walls trust Me I've tried it. We had 2 professional painters in last year and it cost 2,000 euros. We had the walls treated and painted, the doors and skirting sanded and everywhere filled. I still have the guys number if you want.
 
hello jessie,first off the price quoted is ridiculous,maybe and i stress maybe at the very height of the celtic tiger would you pay a price like this.what part of the country are you as this could have an effect on the price.anyway forget what jimbobman says by painting not being a skilled job,being a good painter is very much a skilled job,its not rocket science but i have seen loads of beautiful new houses ruined by homeowners painting it them selves or getting the local handyman in too do the job,trust me there are loads of chancers out there,best bit of advice i can give you is, chat too your friends and surely a few of them can recomend someone too you,that they have dealt with and were happy with the standard of work,recomendations are the best way. getting a total stranger too price something like this is not adviseable.you have too remember if they mess up and dont cover things it will cost you a lot too get it fixed.

I'm not going to repeat myself after this.

Your ignorance on what a painter can do or cannot do is breathtaking.

It is blindingly obvious to me that you know nothing about painting.

The painters I use sand and prep and fill every area...I've seen them do it.

They charge €200 per day but I dare say they will charge a lot less.

There are plenty of people out there who claim they are painters and charge a lot less, well they don't do the same job.

From the gist of your argument, anybody that completes an apprenticeship is wasting his/her time. Some people like a professional job done. I've been in the building game for 40 years and I still employ a professional painter to do my house. And the finished job is beautiful. There is a difference you know.
 
you guys never think of doing the job yourselves get a good roller and a few brushes and get stuck into it, not a big difference from a professional job if you take your time

How do you know the difference? Indeed, I would make my comment for most 'trades'. I have never encountered any tradesman giving me a FAS cert or the like as evidence training.

Training only goes so far, its the time to hone those skills that make the difference.

The lads I use are in the business over 20 years.

If you are looking for painters ask tradesmen not householders.
