Re-applying for job you currently work at

a company has shut one of its offices, and redeployed staff to other building.

The consolidated office has 2 front desk staff, and management firm has told 2 present staff to re-apply for jobs, as 1 member of staff based in closed site will be included.

1. Do company have to offer redundancy before asking staff to re-apply ??

2. Is this common practice ?? , what rights have present workers on-site ??


I am looking for answers, rather than opinions please.

No hard answers from me, I'm afraid - but I'm not sure if it is a good idea for the staff to submit applications. By doing so, they are giving some legitimacy to the approach, and will find it more difficult to say the approach was flawed if they lose out.
