hey all, we're in the process of redesigning and building a kitchen. We're seriously thinking of geting a 'range' cooker or if not at least one that is designed inn a similiar fashion. Any ideas on whats the pro's and con's of them and where abouts to get one for a not so outlandish price?

We have a solid fuel Stanley Donard range. It cost about 4k euro.
We have it linked in to the hot water and heating - (oil boiler too)
It can be a pain doing the ashes - but it does give warmth and atmosphere to the kitchen. Also - good if/when there is a power cut.
Don't bother unless you plan to link it to the heating and hot water sytems.
 
I've an oil fired cooker in my kitchen. It makes the kitchen lovely and cosy but I don't cook on it at all. I'm not sure if I will replace it with another one when it eventually breaks down.
 
Are you thinking along the lines of the stanley? We have got one and to be honest with you it is really more of a "fashion item". It does do our heating throughout the whole house but so would a boiler. When it comes to cooking it is alot handier to use the gas hob or the electric cooker it does come in handy when you are grilling something and also need to do a dish in the oven but not sure if it is 6000 euro worth of handiness :).

I will say thought that it does look fantastic in the kitchen and finish's it off very well and is a nice feature.
 
I have an oil heating range and I love it. It provides heating for the whole house and heats the water. I also do all of my cooking on it for the winter. They are extremely expensive. My parents always had a range - solid fuel for about 20 years and a few years ago purchased an oil range. My Mum does all the cooking on her range.
 
4000-6000 euro :eek: i think thatthe kitchen can go without it and we may resort to a lookalike type of cooker instead. Any suggestions?
 
Rangemaster have a range (no pun intended!) of nice cookers incl hobs that as styled the same as a range cooker. they are just electric/gas instead of solid fuel. so no ashes! and i'd imagine the price is a bit nicer too.

we always had a stanley/Aga-solid fuel/Aga converted to oil in the kitchen when I was growing up. Farmhouse, with mother at home baking etc, kept the kitchen warm, heated a certain amount of water.

My 2 sister-in-laws got one each too but both are out all day working and their houses are empty in the day. They both say it's a complete waste to be heating (with expensive oil) all day, and they're really useless if you try to turn off and turn on (not a good option as they take so long to heat up) or even turn down and up. Also, whereas my mother could cook anything in her aga, my sil's can't manage to get used to the changing temp and testing the oven to see what to bake (!) and use an electric oven as well.

Clothes drying is great.

And you can't beat the toast made on the top of an aga!
 
Waterford Stanley do nice "range" cookers. stainles steel 6 ring cookers
which are 900mm wide. The cost approx 2K, butI haven;t priced them in enough places yet to knowthe cheapest sources.

We had a similar requirment, i.e. a range style cooker but weren't prepared to pay 6 - 10k for a Stanley.

We eventually got a rangemaster 110, all electric. For cooking on its the business and it looks good as well. Around 2.5k this time last year.

If you decide to buy a range cooker you can buy one at A lot cheaper than here. Delivery is 75 sterling for a range cooker and a hood. My friend has bought from them. It was the same cooker as mine but 1000 E chiper. It is a good investment.
 
We bought a Waterford Stanley stainless steel Range for €2,500 complete with s/s splashback and 1m s/s cooker hood. The range has a gas hob with 5 burners including 1 wok burner and 1 large steak griddle plate suitable for a fish kettle or frying steaks, eggs etc.

Both ovens are electric, have fan options, grill options and a rotisserie option. The gas hob is superb and is very quick and convenient to use. The electric ovens likewise. This range is the centre piece of a very sleek modern kitchen and looks great 100% of the time. We have absolutely no regrets and it is so well built and hardwearing that it will be around for a very long time. Don't bother with ranges that are supposed to heat water, radiators and all that - not an option on a summer's evening and you'll spend most of your life cleaning it etc. Even the oil ranges are not worth it. The range we got suits the way we live perfectly.

I phoned around a few places up North and got quoted a price of £900 (ex. VAT) for the Stainless Steel 90cm model from this crowd - and they'll deliver to the Republic for £30...

Unfortunately I've realised that I'm not going to fit a range into an inner-city terraced house - but hopefully the info will prove useful to someone else. I'd say they might be a good option if you didn't want to go the Internet + Overseas Freight route... I think it would be reassuring to have the salespeople on the same island in case anything went wrong!

£900 ex VAT, seriously?? My god, I've just been quoted about €2500 for the Toledo 90 yesterday! You're talking about almost a grand in savings!! Rip of republic!! Sould like a plan...thanks simp
 
Agree go up North, my range look-a-like was over €2,500 in Cavan and same was €1,880 in Enniskillen. Couldn't believe it when I priced it at first, had to ring back the next day just to make sure the quote was correct!
 
did you get it delivered? I'll have a lot of apliances to get and am thinking maybe be better if i hire a van can save on delivery charges!! though was looking at that trading appliance website and they fairly competitive too!! Think my Fisher & Paykel dishwasher/fridge dream is about to come through at those prices!!!
 
I have just connected one to my oil system and it is not working satisfactorily. Any recommendations?
