Raising lower kitchen cabinets

Hi,
Is it possible to raise the height of lower kitchen cabinets? I want to change the existing countertop to a thinner one and it would leave a gap between the splashback and the new countertop if I don’t raise the height of the lower cabinets.

Thanks.

Usually the kickboard is held in place with push-on clips onto the front adjustable legs, remove the kickboard, raise all 4 legs on each unit, and push the kickboard back on.

You are probably going to encounter problems though.

The units will probably be screwed together, raising them will be difficult unless you separate them first.

You might also have complications with plumbing and / or gas if you have a sink / hob or any other appliances in or above the units you are raising.

If you get around any problems and raise the units, there will now be a gap between the kickboard and the units, so a taller kickboard might be needed if the gap is visible.

If you're not replacing the entire kitchen, the simplest option is to choose the same worktop.

Alternatively you could add a plywood layer underneath the new worktop to bring it to the same height.

Depends how big a shadow gap you'll have / be happy with.

Another option would be to leave the lower cabinets as they are & cover the gap above the worktop with an upstand.

What change in thickness are we talking and what finish are your existing cabinets?

Depending on the above the simplest option might be to add a sheet of mdf of that thickness under the new counter that is flush with the existing cabinets and finished to match.

Raising the cabinets is possible, but a bit more work for the reasons above.
