I bought an electronic device from Amazon UK and I have been charged VAT.
It was definitely from Amazon.co.uk and the price was in GBP, but they added vat on the price and then converted to EUR

Is that correct? I thought VAT should not be charged for items from the UK.. But maybe that is just services?

VAT is charged on digital products and services sold by Amazon.co.uk within the European Union (EU).
Amazon.co.uk is obliged, in accordance with applicable law, to charge VAT on sales of digital products and services to customers in the EU. The VAT rate applied to these products and services will be based on the location of the customer.

If it's any consolation, the VAT is going to Irish tax coffers not UK I think.

I had a similar experience, couldn't figure out why the price increased when I tried to check out. Books have no VAT (electronic ones do) but other items do. Some details below.
