Interesting new product now available from PTSB branded as 3V - Looks like a prepaid once-off visa number/voucher - could be used by those without credit cards or for those online providers whom you don't really want to trust with your normal CC number. The price is pretty steep though - €4 for transactions < €100 and €5 for larger transactions.

And if you are a member of [broken link removed] than you can use your topup card to buy the 3V online

Interesting enough instead of using some homegrown solution as it is usualy done in irish banking they purchased it from one of the leader in stored value cards processing, wildcard.

Maybe next we see visa debit cards to allow us access prepaid amounts. Nahh... that would be to modern.

sounds usful for those who do not have a credt card. However in the case of needing to use a cc at a site you were unsure of I think that AIB's transaction online is better as there are no charges

Sounds like something dodgy to me, could easily be used wrongly IMO. how do you trace people using these vouchers inappropriately or age identification ie internet porn etc etc.

According to the 3V [broken link removed] and [broken link removed] terms & conditions:
5. The 3V Cardholder must: (i) be over 16 years of age
...

They are expensive, but very useful to people who have no credit cards because they have decided to tear them up due to overspending.

Banks love them because if you lose them they get to keep the stored value (or if there''s only a few euro left on them, which can be difficult or impossible to spend as you don't top up, you get a new card/voucher.

It does indeed sound dodgy - a money launder's dream!

Anyone got any Northern Bank notes left to "wash"? :)

I can`t understand why banks don`t offer Visa Delta over here. I lived in the UK for a few years and found them invaluable as they do everything a credit card does and the money comes straight out of your account, so no chance of overspending. True, the bank won`t get that nice APR when you don`t clear your credit card balance each month, but they should bite the bullet and stop coming out with half assed solutions like laser and this virtual visa, and give their customers a proper method of spending within their means.
Rant over..

Looks like they dont get hit for the Euro40 stamp duty................ ?

Or have I picked this up all wrong ?

Maybe not so expensive for the occasional user

I have bought a few already. I am a member of Top-up Club, which means i load whatever money i want to spend online onto my Top-up Club card in my local shop and then i converted it into a virtual visa voucher on their website www.top-upclub.com. I don't mind paying the surcharge as its a lot cheaper than credit card interest every month, trust me i know!! You should check it out, i think its well worth it.
