PRSI Deductions

Does a person in receipt of Illness benefit, receiving a pension rate of pay(very low due to years in the job), have to pay PAYE also.
Don't know if I have worded this very well.

If your total income including Illness benefit and pension and any other income you may have from any other source is under E18300 it is unlikely you would come into the tax net.
These figures relate to a single person

I have looked over old pay slips and from week to week I pay no PRSI but sometimes my pay was stopped for a number of weeks awaiting results from the CMO, who would then sanction pay. When I was then paid (and back pay included) I would have PAYE deducted. If I had been paid weekly, I would not have paid any.

It sounds to me that PRSI was deducted from your lump sum rather than Tax. If you had no pay while awaiting decision then you should have a build up of credits which would cover the back payment.
Check your P60 and check that the correct amount of Illness Benefit (the amount you actually received less 6 weeks) is "coded in". The first 6 weeks of Illness Benefit in each tax year is exempt

PRSI is sometimes included under the PAYE heading in some payroll systems
