PRSI credits unpaid maternity previous employer

I noticed my 2021 p60 has only 36 weeks PRSI weeks, presumably as I was on unpaid maternity. Apparently I should have asked my employer to fill in a form and send to revenue to fix this, but I didn’t know. I returned to work but since then I left the employer (big multinational) for another job.

How big a problem is this? Can I do anything about it now? I don’t need the credits for any maternity leave in the near future anyway.

You should get it sorted. I'm surprised a big company didn't do it.

I am not, have heard of multiple stories, indicating this is a problem out there. Some employers do not realise, they are obliged to complete forms, where the “Leave Type” means, the Employee does not get PRSI credits, such as:

Maternity Leave- where Employer does not top up
Unpaid Maternity Leave(extended)

Parental Leave

Paternity Leave
Etc, etc.

Its not an Employees job, to remind employers to complete the forms, its an Employer responsibility, to do this

I agree it's the employer. I assumed a big payroll department is aware of their statutory duties but seems not.

Not necessarily. In larger organisations, it is usually whoever manages the “Leave”, and that tends to be HR, who accept applications for leave, and get them approved, so it varies on org setup and structure.

I work in HR in the HSE, so pretty big.

Yes, we record/approve the leave on the system but it's Payroll who make the PRSI return to Social Welfare or revenue.
 
Update: My ex-employer filled in the form and emailed it to me. I posted it to the Dept Social Protection and within a couple of weeks my credits were updated.
 
The wording of the relevant DSP Operational Guideline is as follows:-

Maternity Leave Credits
Credits are automatically awarded to people in receipt of Maternity Benefit. Credits may also be awarded for unpaid Maternity Leave taken immediately after Maternity Benefit finishes. The person should ask their employer to complete the application form for Maternity Leave credits on their return to work.
