Protecting stuff in the attic

I am going to store a load of 'stuff' into my attic but am concerned that they might get damaged. I notice that it can be rather cool up there (above the insulation). I can see my breath on a cold day.

I want to store books, toys, match programmes etc. I have put it all into plastic storage boxes which I bought in B&Q. Is that sufficient? Or should I cover the boxes in old quilts or similar?

I am throwing out a load of crap and giving other stuff to a charity shop. I am keeping things that I may not ever need again but don't want to throw it out.

Any tips?

We store similar items in our own attic and most of the stuff is either loose or in plastic bags, the only time we have had problems has been if an item was a little damp when it was put up there in which case it gets a bit musty. I think in general the cold weather shouldnt do these type of items any harm, especially if you are putting them in storage containers as long as your attic isnt damp or suffers from insect infestations (or gets very hot in summer which can cause warping - unlikely given the summers we have been having lately) I think leather and wooden items are particularly sensitive to their storage environment so you might want to check before putting any valuable or antique items up there

I found in the past that most things got damp when left unwrapped in the attic so I always put them in black plastic bags. I would be inclined to put them in bags inside the boxes to be sure.
