There's no strict answer to this as it's always on a case by case basis. Who paid what, what the value/contribution of child-minding could be regarded as by the person that did child minding in the house whilst not working (if relevant).
Whilst it might not make sense selling the house may end up being the solution.
The important thing (and what the courts will decide if the two of you can't) is what is best for the children.
