price of internet cafes

I am currently sitting in an internet cafe in Sligo where the price is €5 per hour.

I hear it can be as low as €2.50 per hour in Dublin. Is this so?

There are 2 other places in Sligo.

This high price shows that more competition is needed, like in Dublin.

P, in fairness, it takes a lot more than an idea and guts to start and run an successful business.

Anyone can start a business if they have the guts and determination. It usually takes hard work to make it sucessful, and sometimes some luck, but many all businesses have to start somewhere.

I wouldn't think competition would be the main cause of the price in this instance. The establishment would have to cover:

Insurance
Rent
Staff costs
Equipment costs
Broadband costs
Furniture
Technical support
and maybe a bit of advertising.

I remember seeing just such a service (Irish based if I recall correctly) advertised - i.e. people (not sure if it was just girls though) who would take your query over the phone and then use an Internet search engine to try and find the answer. I remember a few similar types of services being offered in the past and certainly before the web was available or widespread (something like "Ask Bob" was one I think?). I suppose Google are doing something similar with their Google Answers paid service:

answers.google.com/answers/

I was half tempted to offer my own Googling services to AAM readers for a nominal charge once I've gotten them all hooked with my free service to date. Or maybe I'll IPO myself? :lol
 
Sub letting.

I have broadband in my home. Could I possibly sub let the service so to speak for a few Euro per hour or would I be letting myself in for a lot of trouble if the lessee were to access Porn/Paedo sites etc?

Check the terms & conditions of your ISP agreement. Most of them (particularly home connections) preclude "sub letting" or sharing of the connection among others not residing in the property. In the past some people have done this through WiFi in particular but ISPs began to clamp down on it (US, UK etc.). Of course the issue of being responsible for material that users download via the connection is another relevant one.

Just a correction to my earlier mail. The cost of internet access in the 'talkshop' is €3.50 per hour, €1 for twenty minutes. I have seen a couple of other internet cafes, one opposite the wax museum, charging €2 per hour.
