President McAleese is visiting the West of Ireland next week to open a creche and childcare facility. While this is all very fine and dandy, the word is that the event is costing the State €8,000 in terms of organisation and security. Is this figure correct? The people running the facilities have been told that it is. Anyone with any experience of anything similar?

Easily why not?!

How much do you think the presidents time is worth per hour and the cost of the enterouage, security and back office admin.

Sounds high to me. Is there really a value on the presidents time, it is a dummy role for official occasions only.

I'd imagine that probably the main part of the costs are Gardai time, eg driver, directing traffic etc. At least it's a creche and not a pub or off-license she is opening

Her salary, before she took her voluntary paycut this week, was €325,508.

Now I think she does a pretty good job but for the duties and responsibilities required by the position it's a ridiculous amount of money.

I can only assume that it's this large because the head of state "has" to earn more than the Taoiseach.

The Guards would be paid anyway or are they on overtime when they are escorting the President?

Personally I would firmly believe that if Dustin The Turkey opened the creche it would be a small fraction of the cost and the kids would have a ball. So would the adults. To me, this is a complete and utter waste of good money.

I find the President's style very hard to take - reminds me of Margaret Thatcher the way she speaks.....

How much money would be saved if she just sat on her Aras watching Oprah all day? Given that she's there, it makes sense to get her out and about.

hear hear. The €2.5 million it costs to keep the President's show on the road should be spent on more worthy projects, or else not borrowed at all. The govt is borrowing so much already, it is a scandal that 2.5 million per year is borrowed for the post of "President" of this liittle state. Our children + grandchildren will be repaying this money borrowed, plus interest.

uuuughhhhh... very harsh indeed!..... but acurate ...I'll give ya that much!

To be fair afterall she did take a MASSIVE pay cut of 10% so now she is on a mere €300k or there abouts - how is she gonna make do with that you might ask... tough times indeed.

It would make much more sense not to have her there in the first place. Her function is questionable at the very least and when you think about the people who were queing up for the job like Dana and Adi Roche, it makes the position even more of a joke.
