I find it difficult to grasp this. Does it mean if one had a policytaken out for 5 years this clause no longer arises and one need not worry about it. I must be missing some angle?

trojan,

Your understanding is correct - if you are 5 yrs on a policy, all pre-existing conditions are fully covered, according to the cover on your policy.
No waiting applies and no need to worry.

The angle I think you are missing is, if you change to a policy with better hospital cover - for example with extra cover for a private room
in a private hospital. There is a 2 year waiting time applied only to pre-existing illnesses and only in respect of the extra cover on the new policy.
The pre-existing illnesses would still be covered in full according to the previous policy. All new illnesses arising are fully covered on the new
policy from day one.

snowyb I have the policy for 3 months (START PLAN) & the 6 months waiting period is waived & I develop an ear condition, it looks like I will need surgery. Am I covered.
My ear was perfect when I joined!

hillbloom,

If the health insurance company agreed to waive the initial 6 month waiting time, then you should be fully covered.
The problem may arise regarding, the length of waiting lists for surgery in public hospitals.

There is a general waiting list for everyone in public hospitals, regardless of whether you have private health insurance or not.
If you pay for a private consultation with the public hospital ear specialist, this will help reduce waiting times.
