Hi, I am bringing my wife to Prague for a long weekend in Mid-December, to celebrate her em...land-mark birthday! Has anyone out there been there at that time of year and what were the highs and lows of the place? In particular, what is the best way to get from the airport to the old town (near Charles Bridge). I heard that taxis can be a rip-off.
Neither of us were there before. I have flights booked and hope to organise accommodation soon via booking.com or similar. Any suggestions much appreciated...

Been twice that time of year. It was warm once and cold second time. I used both times and found them great. Stayed at http://www.hotelpyramida.cz/ it was cheap but was a bit a way from things and I wouldnt stay again. Stayed at www.andelshotel.com second time still a bit out but fine. I wrote about these before on here I think.

I wasn't in Prague in December but was there in March two years ago and it was pretty cold! Don't get a taxi from the airport - several mini buses go from the airport directly to each person's hotel. They take about 12 people I think. This can be sorted at the airport on arrival (or at least that was the way it was in 2008) Prague is a fabulous city trip, enjoy!

Was in Prague in January last year. Very cold but nice & dry.

I used http://www.prague-airport-transfers.co.uk/ to get to & from the airport having read all the scare messages about taxi drivers. To be honest I think it is mostly scare tactics as so many people use taxis & I've yet to hear a genuine problem. But its very convenient to use the above service, they're there waiting for you on arrival at the airport & also on check out of the hotel.

I stayed at the Savic Hotel, beautiful hotel about 2mins walk from the old town square so unbelievably central.

Don't be surprised at the prices, if you're eating or drinking in the main touristy areas its just as expensive as here, if not more expensive.
