I sow a few rows of potatoes in a small plot in the garden and this year there is a hugh growth in the stalks and am afraid there may be little to dig out in due course. Any ideas how to prevent this in the future.

Was going to wait until the stalks had died down abit. at present they are tall and healthy looking with plently of flowers. My fear is that there will be little underneath!

Hi, unless they are earlies you wouldn't be digging up before late august or early September. They will continue to grow.I dig mine up in September before the frost comes. No point in digging up tiny spuds, leave them to grow.

By the sound of things you will get a good crop.Have you sprayed them?

They are what they call "mid earlies". when should they be dug? Wife would not allow spray! I have a childhood memory of someone commenting on a potato crop that had a large amount of stalks that the crop would be poor as all the "goodness" was gone in the greenery.

did not earth up the plants as they grew?? as this increases the yield
