Portable WiFi

Just wondering if a device exists that I could use when staying in a relatives house who has no WiFi. Would be used for tv Netflix and kids iPads ?

You can get portable wifi/pocket wifi devices on which you can hotspot other devices. Obviously, the portable/pocket wifi device itself connects to the 4G/5G network, you'll need a data plan for that.

As S class points out, your phone can do this, but there may be limit to the number of devices that can hotspot from it at any time.

Another common alternative is a dedicated 4G/5G modem/router which takes its own SIM. It does the same job as a phone configured to provide a hotspot but may be more efficient. But you do need to pay for another SIM.

You might want to check what the quality of the 4G/5G signal is before making a decision

Starlink does just that I believe. But you’d need space to set it up.

I haven’t tried it but I know folks in France who use it when they go camping

I think the quality of the 4G would be ok as it’s in a town.
I think the data plan on my SIM might not cover requirements and I might need my phone or be gone out when the data is needed. So what router would you suggest and would I get it in any electrical outlet ?

Do a few broadband speed checks on a mobile phone from the house. This will tell you if mobile WiFi will be adequate.

If you only need a few devices connected at a time an old smart phone could be set up as a permanent hot spot.

I had an outage of broadband for over 2 months a while ago.
I used an old mobile for about 1 month on 4g. This was operated off a Lycamobile SIM card. It was unlimited data.
But once the data usage reached 100gb the speed trottled back to a snails pace.

As the outage continued and I needed more devices simultaneously I bought one of these.

I am lucky to have a mobile mast about 200 metres away and I was getting better speeds from the mobile router than from my fixed line legacy broadband.

I will be scrapping this when the contract ends.

I bought a cheapo Chinese 4G router years ago on AliExpress back when it was easier/more cost effective to order from China. I sold that on when I no longer needed it. When I did need another one I just bought it second hand on Adverts.ie. In each case it was about €30 and I used it with a 48 SIM and their €12.99 p.m. unlimited data plan. Bear in mind that some people have been claiming that 48 may throttle speeds if/when you go over 200GB download data usage but this is all still a bit unclear/anecdotal. I used 4G but a 5G router should be even better/faster.

Also consider downloads. Depending on your kids age this might do the trick if they plan in advance. Wr always do it for travelling as even with tethering to a hot spot you are not always guaranteed coverage.

It's still very easy to order from AIi express. All items now include Irish vat. I again started buying from them about a year ago.

They have "choice" items. If you order a total of 10 euro of these items they are postage free and come packaged together in one parcel.

They are sent by air freight and typically are delivered within 2 weeks.

A few years ago the delivery was up to 2 months overland.

It used to be like a geography lesson checking the delivery tracking. By rail throught maybe 10 cities in China, through the Kyber Pass, through various Asian and European cities to maybe Amsterdam and then by ship to Ireland.
