Plumbing for Gas Cooker

Hey all,

Looking at cookers now the build is progressing well. I love gas rings and would be my first choice but I dont have town gas being rural. Does anyone know a typical set up for using gas cylinders?

I would think that the cylinder would be stored in a garage and then certified gas lines installed to the house with a stop valve or two along the way. My issue is that I do not have a garage, could I have the bottle stored in an unseen corner from a sticking out utility room?

If you are talking about a proper LPG cylinder it would have to be outdoors a certain distance from the house. Alternatively just use a yellow gas bottle but it will be a pain.

Hi Krissovo,

Your plumber should be able to give you details on this. We are getting just a gas hob installed in our build (also out rural) and the rest are going to run on electricity. Going to use two of the large cylinders (only one feeds at a time. You just have to have the cylinders so many meters from a window or vent. Just found it on this uk calor website - - I would be sure that the distances would be similar if not the same in Ireland - google should help you.

Check the list of registered contractors in your area on www.rgii.ie These are the only guys permitted to work on Nat Gas or LPG and can give you guidance over the phone for free. Also try your local LPG distributer (flogas or calor??) for info. All work from the same book of regulations - genrally speaking, LPG cylinders need to be ouside.

The type of cylinders fit I had in mind was the ones that Clarelassie pointed out.

After searching the RGII site it turns out that the plumber doing my build is registered. Why did he advise me to go for a electric hob when I wanted gass I wonder?
 
Probably to make life a lot easier for himself!! The choice is yours - go with what you want - will be a lot harder to change the other way around in later years.
 
Your Gas - RGII registration is not a requirement to work with LP gases (YET!)
they are ironing out the details now, but should be legal b4 years end

Surely, still a sensible place to start?
 
We have a rural new build and had a gas fitter come and plumb in the pipe for our gas hob which runs off the 12kg bottles. We are on our 2nd bottle since last Nov so the hob doesnt use much as it gets a fair amount of use. The bottle just sits outside with no problem. Last winter we covered it to stop it icing up but that was all. Total was €160 inc a 12kg bottle and new jets for the hob.

This is the best place to look, ask for an approved colar/flogas installer. they will have required experiance and qualifications.
