Just a note to remind the good folk of AAM to check their supermarket receipts.

After shopping at SV a couple of weeks ago, afterwards when I looked at the receipt, I noticed that I was triple charged for a pack of toilet roll. I called the store straight away and went back and spoke with a manager. He checked footage and said it was scanned 3 times. I recall there was a barely audible beep from that self-service till. The manager also mentioned that selecting own bag may disable the weight check, which I found interesting.

I told him there were 2 issues here. Firstly I wanted a refund as I only had one pack of toilet rolls. More importantly I suggested there may be a systemic issue, where the scales systems protects the store in event of no scan, but it does not protect the customer in the case of inadvertent multiple scans.

Anyway, I got my refund for the two packs I was incorrectly charged for and recommended that the manager to check that till.

How many other customers were/could be potentially affected is unknown. But I think this important enough to highlight as there could be hundreds, possibly more customers affected over time.

I’m not saying I’m not prone to the odd senior moment, but fairly careful but I think this could happen to anyone.

Please check your supermarket receipts!

That is nothing new. This is going on for years. Our SV shop is notorious for double charging. My wife checks the receipt every week- and there is in 1 out of 5 something charged double. Most of the time it is only 2 or 3 euros more- but considering the amount of people shopping there on a daily basis, it adds up for the shop.
The biggest overcharge we ever had was the delivery charge. Instead of the usual fiver, it was suddenly eight times a fiver.

Only today, I checked my Dunnes receipt at home, the checkout person did not scan the net of 3 swedes @ €1.49, instead he entered 3 x individual swedes at 99 cent each. Not worth going back for the €1.48, but I will be wise to that one next time.

Another recent occasion the usual size hand of bananas was over double the usual price, customer service gave a refund and apologised saying the scales at that till were faulty.

Always worth checking, mistakes, usually in their favour happen often.

Interesting that the own bag disables the weight check. From both perspectives!
I often use a basket for shopping, it clips on my bike, and the self service tills do not like it one bit and I always have to have a staffer appears to ok it. the scales is expecting a lightweight bag I’ve been told. I must see how it reacts to unexpected items in the begging area..

I once got charged €42.00 for an item that should have been €4.20 from Tesco - It was a big shop and I may have missed it if I didnt look at the receipt. They gave me a prompt refund and apologised about a "system error" but I wonder hoe many others missed it. I always check receipts nowadays

I admire the Lidl and Aldi staff for the speed that they process the items but I checked my receipt one night and saw that I had been charged 3 times for 1 item. As I waited to speak to the only guy on checkouts, late at night, I watched and saw that most people did not check the prices ringing up, used their phones to pay and did not take a receipt. I know they could most likely check the transaction on their phones later but how many would bother doing that or even going back to claim a refund.

I was over charged today in Dunnes. I always tot up in my head as I go around and thought it was dearer than expected. I was charged nearly double for a box of sweets that were on offer. I should have checked at the time| I guess I'll be more careful in future.

The "2-fors" are notorious for the over charge in my experience. €5.99 each or 2-for €10 almost invariably charged at €11.98 at the checkout. "System-error" me hat in CENTRA/Dunnes/Tesco/SPAR/SuperValu, LIDL/ALDI not so much on the "but the computer says" front.

Use the scan guns, easy to see all prices on the gun or missed offers. I come acoss supposed offers not appearing on the gun quite a lot. Once detected, I remove the offenders and carry on.

Good point. I normally use self scan checkouts as I don't tend to do big shops so I'm pretty aware of what I'm being charged.

Marks and Spencer have ceased their self scan, using your phone. I found that good to use, although I did make a few errors myself, scanning stuff twice, but it was easily spotted and corrected.

Shame they’ve stopped it. Being able to scan and pay entirely uninterrupted was convenient. Apparently it was widely abused, according to the man on the till in Blackrock

Wonder how much profit supermarkets make on 'system errors' every year?

Great you got your money back and yes it's always great advice to check your receipts/bills/ invoices no matter where you're spending your money

But why "check that till", as as far as I can see the till worked as it should, it charged you for an item you scanned 3 times
Yes I agree that sometimes you don't hear the beep but don't they provide a screen where you can check your running total??

But at the same time I would also agree with your point about the tills not protecting the customer given that its a weight based system
If it can detect when something is placed on the scales without scanning it should be able to detect an issue with over scanning

thought it was only Tesco that offered these?
Not all Tescos do. I shop primarily in Tesco Roselawn.

Had occassion to stop in the Tesco in Stonybatter, spent a few minutes trying to find the guns, finally I collared a tesco employee who told me " you're having a laugh love, sure we'd be robbed blind in 10 minutes flat arund here".

There are occasions when the convenience backfires and you get a full audit, leaving you bricking it, doubting that you've scanned everything.

Thankfully, always pass. (touchwood).

When you shop in Aldi and you buy something with 10%, 20%, 30% discount and go to the self-service check-out, you must call the store employee to install the discounts, otherwise you will be paying full price. I learned that a few months ago in Aldi when I questioned the non appearance of discounts on the till receipt.
