Phone / China / Western Union

Apologies if this is a bit incomplete - but my mother (85+) had a series of phone calls apparently from China - asking for money in some round about way - trying to extract details - and suggesting Western Union - apparently knowing exactly where it was available.

Anybody come across anything like this?

I think it's safe to say that if Western union is mentioned,its a scam.
