I am a soon to be unemployed solicitor. I am researching all my options at present and one of those options is returning to university to undertake a PhD in law. I reckon its better than sitting on my behind for the next few years and I think I would really enjoy it. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of doing a PhD in law and more specifically if you can tell me about the funding options and structure of the study.
Thanks!

Sorry to hear of pending unemployment, it's getting rough out there.

As far as I am aware there are as many types of funding as there are types of PhDs!

Your best bet is to contact universities directly and have a chat. You will need to be eligible also ( do you have a 2h1 or 1st or masters?).

You must also think about what your aim is AFTER the PhD. You will be out of practice for 3 to 5 years which is a long time in law. Are you interested in academia?

I'd just sound the warning note that full time lecturing positions are few and far between also with a huge amount of interest. Only the elite few with extensive experience and long publications lists, research credentials etc seem to get those coveted positions.

Part-time or contract lecturing is more accessable I would have thought.
