A friend of mine will be applying for the Retirement pension very soon and his wife has for some time been getting Disability Benefit. From reading the various articles on the Revenue website,he believes that his wife will lose this benefit and be automatically switched to the adult dependent allowance when his pension is activated. However, as this is means tested and she would have some assets of 25k-30k she will get a minimal allowance and they will lose substantially overall. Can anyone clarify if this is correct.

Retirement Pension (now called State Pension - Transition) isn't means tested, it's based on PRSI contributions. His wife isn't considered to be an adult dependant, being a welfare recipient in her own right. His pension will be paid to him at personal rate only. If she were on a reduced rate of benefit (less than he'd be paid for her as an adult dependant - currently €139.50) then she could cease her benefit and become a dependant on his claim.
