i would appreciate anyone,s advice if possible,my brother is in hospital for a week and could be there for several more,at the moment he is claiming social welfare but is unable to sign or collect his entitlements, and he has earned them, the doctor said he will sign certs and i can collect them from the hospital, but what do i do with them,i have no idea how the s/w system works so if any one can help, thank you.

As your brother is not available for work at the moment, he needs to make a claim for Illness Benefit.

The Doctor should give your brother a Social Welfare medical certificate. The "first certificate" has an application form attached to it. It should be posted to SW (the address is on the form).

A SW medical cert is then needed each week until your brother recovers and can sign on for jobseekers again.

If he qualifies for illness benefit, it will be sent out by cheque.
