Payment by Direct Debit - processing date

I apologize if the questions seem silly. I haven't had much experience with bill payment by Direct Debit.

- When is the payment usually requested? On the bill due date or earlier?

- When is a particular Direct Debit set up? Before the first request for payment or when the first payment is processed?

I’m asking because my credit card payment is supposed to be taken automatically from the current account I have with PTSB. The due date is in two days, but when I logged in to the online banking today, I got the following message in the Direct Debits section:

THERE ARE NO DIRECT DEBITS OR LENDING STANDING ORDERS CURRENTLY ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR ACCOUNTS.

I’m a bit concerned as I don’t want to start off with missing the first payment.

Hi VanHeusen,

Did you set up a direct debit specifically with the utility company itself? If so, you should contact them about it.

Otherwise (and I find this handier), you can go to PTSB's open 24 online banking and set up a bill payment/s there yourself. They will give you a drop down list of the various utility companies and you just pay them from your account oline as your bills come in.

I prefer that option than an actual standing order.
