paying tax when haven't worked for eight months of the year

Hi,

I'm starting work next week on around 50 k salary. I haven't been working all year as i was a full-time student up to now. I had presumed i would be tax free for the first few months but a friend told me i will be taxed but can claim it back at the end of the year? Just wondering does anyone know what way it works?
