Paying Banks legal fees?

I was in my local bank today to discuss the possibility of taking out a commercial mortgage. While going through the various expenses that would be involved I was surprised to hear that I would have to pay the banks solicitors fees. They would give me a choice of two solicitors that the bank uses but I would have to pay the fees!
Was this always the case with commercial mortgages?

This was the case with some banks, where there were 2 solicitors involved. The Banks and the borrowers. Some borrowers actually used the same solicitor as the bank to reduce costs. However, I don't think this practice is allowed anymore

The client is required to meet the fees of the Bank solicitor in completing any mortgage over property to be taken as security. This is standard practise for all Banks. As last poster indicated it did become customary in the mid 2000's for banks to permit the client's solicitor to complete the charge on behalf of both parties. This practise led to some significant problems and as far as I am aware is currently no longer applied by any |Irish financial institution.
