PAYE Tax reclaim

I have what I think is a very convoluted situation which I would like your advice.

I worked in Ireland up until June 2009 when my position was made redundant. I had paid tax under PAYE up to that point.

I was then offered a similar position by our sister office(different company under same group) in our UK office which I accepted. I made the neccesary travel/ accomodation arrangements to facilitate my work there. From July 2009 until now I have been subject to UK tax as an employee.

I have worked continuously up to last week when I was eventually made redundant.

What I am wondering now is, Would I be entitled to a repayment of any of the PAYE tax from the Irish Revenue for the tax year ending 31 Dec 2009 considering that I spent the remainder of July 09 - April 10 working in the UK subject to a different tax regime?

How will this effect me now that I am back in Ireland and claiming Job seekers Benefit?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
In normal circumstances where someone leaves Ireland and is not resident in Ireland in the year following the year of departure they will qualify for what is called "Split Year Relief" which does what you are proposing.
As you have returned to Ireland you will be have been resident here in 2009 and 2010 so you will be assessed on worldwide income. You will get relief for the tax paid in the UK.
