paye return

Hi

I have been working in Ireland since 2004 and left Ireland last July looking for work abroad. In October I secured a one month contract role in Munich and employed a UK umberella company to look after my tax affairs. Because they deducted €5764 emergency tax from my payslip I enquired when I could claim this back from the Irish government and they said that they paid paye on a quarterly basis, my concern is in Ireland paye/prsi is paid on a monthly basis. Is it fair to say any company in UK pay employee's tax on a quarterly basis.

Many thanks
Mary

Could you clarify what country you paid the tax to, because that is the only country you can claim it back from.

In Ireland, PAYE/PRSI is collected from every pay packet regardless of whether you get paid weekly/monthly/fortnightly or sporadically. There is no rule about monthly.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, I am confused as I thought the same however the umberella company in the UK sent payslip with Irish PPS number on it and said they make quarterly returns and they would pay the Irish Government in January. Does this sound dodgy to you?

I don't know exactly what an umbrella company is, but if they have you on their books as an employee for October, they could very well have your Paye included in their quarterly return Sep to Dec, which, as they say, they would be returning and paying in January. It sounds reasonable, not dodgy.
