Parental leave query

My daughter is scheduled for an operation, I have applied for parental leave giving the 6 weeks notice in order to spend 4 weeks with her, (2 weeks scheduled in hospital and two weeks with her at home) my boss has no problem to grant me unpaid leave but told me that I cannot avail parental leave as she is going to be 8 years old on 01/05 and in order to qualify for parental leave, you need to take the full 14 weeks, I have never apply to it until now. I thought it was up to 14 weeks you could take so therefore there is a maximun of 14 weeks but no minimun really as long as your employer agrees
Is it true that once your start parental leave you have to take the 14 week? i have tried the equity authority phone number but no answer, I have sent an email but no reply - would someone know the answer of this question ? Thanks
 
She's wrong.
From here;
"The 14 weeks per child may be taken in one continuous period or in 2 separate blocks of a minimum of 6 weeks. There must be a gap of at least 10 weeks between the 2 periods of parental leave per child. However, if your employer agrees you can separate your leave into periods of days or even hours."

It really depends on your employer as to how you can take Parental Leave. For example, in many areas of the public service, you can take PL as small as a half a day at a time.
 
The problem is I cannot take 14 weeks as my daughter will be 8 in the middle of it so they told me therefore I cannot available parental leave. Between the 6 weeks notice necessary to avail parental leave and her birthday, there is only 10 weeks. I find it a bit harsh especially when there is no problem to grant me unpaid leave for 4 weeks

But there is no obligation to take 14 weeks.

Your employer is wrong to insist that you have to take 14 weeks parental leave
