Paper Form 12 submitted - How long does this typically take?

I usually submit our returns via MyAccount and it's a quick, easy and efficient process and any refunds/underpayments are paid/credits adjusted appropriately.

This year (for 2025), i'm required to submit (two, one to date of death, and one from date of death to the end of the year) paper based forms as you can't do it online in the year of bereavement. Does anyone know roughly how long it takes Revenue to look at these?

Ordinarily i wouldn't particularly mind, but i made a large-ish AVC in early 2026 (in respect of 2025), and should be due a subtantial amount of tax back, and it would be helpful to have a sense of how quickly (or slowly) to expect this.

In case it's relevant...

Why did you do it that way rather than just using your Revenue myAccount?
Revenue instructed me to submit the paper based forms, and even posted me out the paper forms (which i would happily have just printed myself). Not quite sure why they insist on this way, but i get the impression from the various calls/meeting i had with them that the systems in the background can't cater for much complexity beyond very standard stuff.

My tax affairs are not particularly complex, but there were slight awkward items such as additional income for my late wife (dividends, salary, and social protection benefits) received after date of death.

We had been jointly assessed for a long time, but after her death i lost access to see her reported incomes/taxes and what Revenue had on record for her. Eventually they manually wrote out the numbers for me to include in the tax return. And their figures included some but not all of the income she'd received after her death.

Long winded way of saying just a few awkward aspects that i expect the system wouldn;t cope with. I didn't mind doing the two paper based forms, popped them in the same envelope, with a cover letter detailing what i'd done with various incomes, so whoever is reviewing it has the overall context, and how the two returns are intertwined. From my perspective it should all come out in the wash so i'm not too bothered.

In case it's helpful, i posted my paper forms on 6th March, and got a message on MyEnquiries on 9th May saying all was completed and SOL would issue shortly. The SOL was then available the following day. If i've got my maths right that's around 9 weeks from submission to completion.

Last year for me it was about 3 weeks, similar the year before.

Last week I requested two of the paper forms online and got them in the next day's post.

I like to keep a paper copy together with any MED 1 receipts.

I attended a Revenue information session today and specifically asked this question. From the time a completed form 12 is submitted it is currently taking 6 to 8 weeks to complete the review due to a backlog.
