Painting Kitchen cupboards

Hi
I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that does kitchen cupboard painting. We moved house and the kitchen isn't to my taste, its a light beech shaker kitchen, its only a year old and a complete waste to rip out as I'm sure it cost alot of money. I'd love to paint the kitchen white, dulux do a kitchen cupboard paint but I'm a bit too nervous to try it myself. I saw a van with lettering on the side that does this, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the company.

Has anyone else done this, how did it turn out?

Hi sydney100,

if you do a search on the threads - there should be something about painting kitchen cupboards. There was a discussion about 2 months ago regarding same. Best of luck.

Yeah I saw that but its not something I would attempt myself, was hoping someone could recommend a company or handyman to do this, I know there

I don't think are kitchen is laminate well the doors anyway seem like solid wood, the carcass is definitely laminate. I still dont' want to do it myself in case I make a mess and I don't have the time. Hopefully somewhere out there knows of a craftsman who speacialises in this.

I'm thinking of painting my cupboards as well and had considered using a primer then using something like Farrow and Ball oil based eggshell or full gloss. Really not sure if this would be the right thing to use but will have to give it a try on back of a cupboard door

I'm in Dublin, actually I was down in my local paint shop and I asked the lady there about it and she did it in her house, and she has a painter that the shop recommends and apparently he handpaints the cupboards. Two coats of satin apparently does it. I bought some paint and I'm going to do my cupboards in the utility room myself to see how it looks, then get this painter out to give me a quote.

If its less than a grand I think its worth doing, we bought this house second hand and although the kitchen isn't to my taste, it seem pretty wasteful to rip out a 18mth old kitchen. It probaly cost 15K to put in as its very well done and very big, with pull out condiments racks etc and built in appliances.

As we only recently moved into this house, it means we can live with the kitchen for the next few years if its painted and spend the money elsewhere in the house as we have lots and lots to do.

Hi Sydney100,

I got someone to paint my kitchen 3 years ago - at that stage it was a 12 year old kitchen, so he sanded, sugar soaped, two layers of uno undercoat and then one or two coats of satin paint - hasn't chipped and it looks very well completely transformed the kitchen. Good luck with your kitchen and your house.

I know a painter who has done a few Kitchens but he is Donegal based. He put on a product called ESP (Easy Surface Prep) first which gives a key to any surface. It is rubbed on with a cloth.

What about [broken link removed] cork based, does travel. Not affiliated just neighbour.

Thanks a painter came yesterday and reckoned it will take 4 days at E145 per day so well worth doing as I said the kitchen is only 18mths old so I really didn't want to replace it. So I'm going to paint it, add new tiles and new worktops so it should look like a new kitchen

OK, your price seems very competative in todays market, you must be supplying the paints at that price. The reason I say that is that 145 x 4 = 580... if VAT is included VAT would be approx 75 so the price is 505 + 75 VAT = 580. (VAT is probably not going to be paid at all really, sounds like a cash price)

While that may sound ok, the materials may cost...
BIN primer, 3.8liters = 55 (wouldn't use it all, maybe 1/2 to 3/4)

F&B, 5.0 to 7.5 liters = approx 150 (may get by with 5 liters @ 95)
cheaper paints instead of F&B = approx 45 to 60

so 100 materials minimum (also 10 to 15 euro consumables).

So profit could be as little as 400 for 4 days work.. not great for him, good for you.

4 days seems quite accurate to me and I have experience judging painting time.

A good job would involve degreasing/cleaning all cabinets, masking the gaps between exterior and interior of cabinets to produce crisp lines, two coats primers, two coats top coats, knobs, cornices, base boards etc...

It should look lovely in the end, if the guy does it right you may pay a little tip if you're generous as he won't have been creaming you.... even an extra 50 to 100 makes the difference between a good wage and slave labour. After all some painters would quote 1,000 upwards... 145 a day is dead cheap, Irish pros would start at 200 I'd imagine

Cheers
Joe

Hi sydney, how did you get on painting your kitchen, Just wondering because its something i was considering ?

Ended up doing it myself, it took forever was sorry I started it but the results were worth it. Looks amazing turned out so well I don't want a new kitchen now. Painted it white matt and got new tiles, I did it myself as I didn't want to spend 800 or 900 on getting a professional painter as I thought I would get a new kitchen a year later so it was just to improve the appearance for a short time but it turned out so well, I don't want a new kitchen, hasn't chipped or anything. Can send before and after photos if anyone wants to see before they try. Please note I have no DIY experience and no patience it took me 3 weeks about 2/3 hours per day and about 3 coats in total.

Hi Sydney100,
Could you please send me on the before & after pictures. Really want to change the colour of our kitchen units but would like to see the end results before we go ahead. Thanks.

Hi Sydney

Would you be willing to post up a picture, just something small to indicate the colour. I'm buying a wooden kitchen from a local company and they want an extra 1200 to paint it cream. If i was inspired or confident enough I would attempt it myself once fitted.

Sorry but how do I put up an image, when I click on the image icon it looks like the image has to be on a webpage, looking for the url (I have images on my desktop). If someone can tell me how to do it I will before and after

Yeah, you'll have to host the image elsewhere and link to it.
