Overtime Pay

I dont know if this has been asked before.

If there is no contract signed and you work off an hourly rate is it standard to get double time after 4 hours (at time and a half) of over time in one day, ie. I worked my 8.30 - 5 and continued till 10, giving me 5 hours overtime. I get my first 4 hours at time and a half and then my fifth hour is at double time. Is this standard, is this law or is it all only time and a half.

Thanks

Am I entitled to overtime pay?

Overtime pay is not a statutory entitlement. Policy in relation to overtime may be decided by the employer and agreed as part of the employee's terms and conditions of employment. Some industries are covered by registered employment agreements (REA's) and Employment Regulation Orders (ERO's), which contain binding regulations regarding overtime. For more information on these agreements view REA's/ERO's.

I started a 4-month contract with a large company in the city and while it was not stated in my contract, the guy who hired me came to me a week after I started and said "I never mentioned this but it goes without saying if you are here over 7.5 hours then charge overtime."

Now he never mentioned anything about time-and-a-half or double-time but I just charge time-and-a-half whether it's 2 hours or 5 hours overtime. I never thought there would be any law as such governing this. I presume as Graham says, it's more an agreement at the time.

If we're here longer than our set hours it's tough luck. I remember getting a measly time and a quarter once for a Saturday.
