Overseas EU car insurance

Considering the very high car insurance premia in Ireland, has anyone considered buying a policy in another EU country to cover all of Europe, a-la non-nationals insurance policies that get coverage in the courts section of my local paper occassionally.

If non-nationals can buy insurance overseas to cover them in Ireland, is there any reason we cannot ?

Would a European insurance broker sell a policy to an Irish driver ? Would it be effective ? I suppose it would depend on the terms...any ideas ?

Forgive my cynicism, but if you apply to the non-Irish insurance company, with an Irish address, would they not assess the risk to them of a claim in Ireland and charge you an appropriate premium.....

AFAIK it is not allowed yet.

I am a EU national, and my car I insured via some american crowd (which has flat rates of about 350 Euro a year for foreigners). But in the end the tax disc has still to be issued by an Irish Insurance (AIG in my case).

TIme for a reform of the Insurance sector imo.
