Hi Guys,

Interesting read, confirms some things:

"Over 60% of the retail price of fuel is tax, and that does not go down when oil prices drop."

Since 2008 there have been huge increases in Irish fuel taxes. 8 cent was added to petrol in the emergency budget of October 2008, 5 cent was added to Diesel the following April. Carbon Tax at between 4 & 5 cent per litre was added last December, and of course VAT at 21% is added on top of these taxes.

If it were not for these tax increases, a litre of petrol would be at about €1.20, not the record high of €1.35. A tax-free litre of petrol or diesel would only cost 56 or 58 cents."

Link below includes price comparisons with all Euro Countries and Non EU:

Well, even though it seems we are not the highest in Europe for fuel, Im not sure of the tax component per country. What drives me nuts here is TAXING TAX. Slap on the Excise Tax, the Carbon Tax and so on THEN charge 21% value added tax on these taxes also ...

The Average price of petrol from the countries listed is: 131.05

Ireland = 134.4c

So are the others highly taxed also?

The Carbon Tax increased our prices yet with our dwinling economy our Carbon output has reduced but the Carbon Tax, punishing us for previous high Carbon outputs, no longer exists.

In the UK the fuel is now more expensive. Im heading to France soon and the Fuel is also CRAZY expensive.

However, they do not have VRT and servicing, parts and insurance are cheaper.
