The internal system we have is "reverse osmosis" and it cost around 550 euros to have fitted, which was a couple of years ago. The best thing about it is that the water is very safe to drink so more buying water in the shops! As regards annual servicing of the main unit, from what I can gather, there is no need for that to be done, but, again, it may depend on the particular system that you have. In any event, I don't imagine that another month or two without a service is going to have any harmful effect so that you can get more feedback before waving good-bye to 130 euros...

I used to work in a pharmaceutical factory and serviced industrial reverse osmosis units. They are reasonably complicated for sure but the only regular maintenance they need is the bag filter on the water inlet to the machine. This keeps solid particles from getting into the RO filter membranes and you don't want that as they tend to cost a bit. In the case of a domestic unit, it will be one of those cartridge filters in a tall narrow housing. It may even have a gauge on top telling you the condition of the filter. They are cheap and easy to replace. The only other maintenance would be visual checks that everything is ok, like leaks, cracks etc. If something electrical goes then call a service engineer but not before you check electrical connections and put some of that contact spray on them to keep them clean and electrically conductive. All this done while powered down by the way...... Regarding the RO membranes, it should say in the manual how often they should be replaced. I'm guessing years, if ever.
