Oscail - distance learning

Hi guys

I am thinking about taking the bachelor of Arts with Oscail next September. This seems to be the best option for me to study while working and I was just looking for people's experiences with either Oscail or the Arts course itself. I haven't studied in about 7 years so am a bit apprehensive about returning to education - it this difficult to do?. My second query is the tax relief - does anybody know 'roughly' the tax relief (if any) per module/per year. Each module costs €750 per year.

Any info would be appreciated.

Not sure about Oscail course but I am in my third year of a distance learning business course -Quinn school UCD. Great course but a lot of work involved. Keeping a job going and studying is not easy - you will need to be very disciplined and manage your time effectively. Having said that I haven't studying for many many years ...to many to mention and certainly not as recent as "seven" like you. If the course interests you and you are prepared to work at it, you will get so much back from it. Four people I know in my year have landed new jobs out of the BBS course we are doing and we don't graduate until next year. I'd say go for it.

Go with Open University. Not Oscail.

That's a very general statement without going into any of the possible pro's and con's of each.

Given the OPs specific position and requirements, is it not possible that the Oscail course is more suitable?

Usually a more frequent poster would suggest this....but have you tried a search for Oscail in this forum ? It has been discussed several times and perhaps you will get some info from these threads. Also you might be able to PM some of the posters who have done or are in the process of competing the Arts course.....just a suggestion !

I did the MSc in Ops Management with Oscail and was happy with the course but found Oscail a nightmare to deal with....all discussed in this post (hope this link works)

I got the impression from people I met at exams though that the undergraduate courses in Arts and also their Nursing courses were better run. Also, if I recall correctly, the courses are not as expensive as the OU ones.

Use Google as per my signature rather than the vBulletin search which can be less reliable/useful.

See my earlier post about searching AAM using Google which is generally more reliable than using the vBulletin search.

Well make sure you are comparing accurately.

Modules in the UG Arts programme at Oscail are 15 ECTs (European Credit points) you need 12 for the whole degree

OU modules in Arts are bigger 60 OU credits (600hrs of study) the equivalent of 30 ECTS. You'd need 6 of these

So €1500 for 2 Oscail modules and round about €1700 for a 60 credit OU module....so yes OU are a little dearer.

Look at what you get for your money..all course materials, quality of materials etc, tutorial provision. Are the range of modules you can choose from to make up your degree wide/ fit your interest.

The OU has a BA Hons Open where you can combine a huge range of courses in arts,social science, languages, business etc.

If you want to study Irish History and Literature, then the OU would not have much of this.

Like anything, do your research. Both Oscail and OU have a Credit Transfer systems, so if you start at one you can always transfer to the other if the need/desire arises.

Tax Relief is at the Basic Rate - 20% and you apply by downloading the Relief of PT Third Level fees from the Revenue website, the college will supply a receipt and letter.
