It appears a VAT refund of 21% is claimable from opticians
[broken link removed]

How far can this be backdated and is it up to the individual to aprroach their optician's to get refunds ?

I just bought a new pair of glasses for €295 without having any supplements/allowances contributing towards the cost.

Does this ruling mean I can return to the optician and demand €61.95 VAT back?

If i recall correctly, this was discussed last month on another website. It only relates to how opticians can claim back the VAT THEY paid & not we paid. I seem to remember that Specsavers stated that they had no intention in passing it on to their customers.

It looks to me as if it's the vat we paid them and they paid over to the revenue then. It now appears that they needn't have charged us part of the vat. But do you think you'll see opticians' prices falling now?

This should be a nice little earner for opticians. I hope they get interest on the monies overpaid.
In all honesty, it should not be difficult for them to id their living customers and refund.
