Opinions on possible job change

Hi,

I'm just looking for some peoples opinions about a possible job opportunity.

I have a good job at the moment, it's a place that I enjoy working and the pay is ok. It is a slightly less involved role than I was doing in the last few years but I am recently getting more responsibility.

Previously I was working abroad as a team lead and specialist in a certain field but I left to come home for personal / family reasons and found the job I have now, which is not related to the specialist knowledge I have as there is not much demand for it here.

Recently a number of companies in the field I used to work in have contacted me to see about jobs or contracts but none seemed interested when I said I wanted to stay in Ireland but that if I was willing to travel with Ireland as a base then they would be interested.
Now one company, where a number or former colleagues are working, has come back to me and said I can work from Ireland for them (subject to successful interviews / testing etc).

It's a 6 month rolling contract and my former colleagues have been there for about 2 years on this type of contract and I am reliably informed that there is 2yrs+ work for the role they want me for.

The new role would be twice the money I am currently on but obviously it's a risk and doesn't come with the security or benefits of the current job.

I am trying to get some money together to buy property and this job is very appealing because it would mean I would have a deposit quickly (about 6 months as opposed to 1.5 to 2 years in my current job).

I am considering what to do if I do get the job offer. I like where I work but did like the responsibilities I used to have.

What do people reckon? I know I am lucky to be in this position in the recession but I am cautious about making a move that I may regret.

Any opinions / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

One serious consideration that I foresee the mortgage lender having a possible issue with when you do go to purchase (regardless of the deposit) is this rolling contract and the lack of a permenant job. You could argue that no job is permenant these days but what you are in now sounds alot more stable. This is something I have seen friends come up against in similar situations.

Some people can live with the contract work, love it and do not over stress about the possibilities of getting dropped and others can't and need the comfort of knowing they are safe in a stable gig.

You gotta ask yourself which one fits you best.

Yeah that is something I was worried about but I do think I would be able to find a more permanent job if necessary (maybe that is naive of me though?)... I have a decent amount of experience and good qualifications which would hopefully help me in the future. Also the travelling jobs I have been offered were permanent so I could take one of those if stuck as they said if my travelling situation changed the position was there for me (but as I mentioned I am keen to be in Ireland).

That is very true for the industry I am but I don't think that banks would be willing to accept that sort of situation so I guess I would have to change eventually.

I suppose being dropped is not something I am too worried about as I know that company are looking for me because of my skills and experience on a very similar project a couple of years ago, but it could happen I guess.

Irrelevant I know but... I am finding this quite a dilemma because the company here have been very good to me and it's a really good crew to work with but the money and experience in the other role would be significantly greater.

Id say go for it and it does sound like at least subconsciously you have made your decision. The uneasiness about security is natural i think in this climate. Who knows how secure the other job even is. The extra money in a worst case scenario of a work gap would probably see you through it.
