Old cups, plates etc - rubbish or recycling?

My mother bought us a nice set of cups, plates etc, so some of our older stuff is being chucked, and I was wondering about disposal.

Is it recyclable, or does it just go in the bin?

If they are still useable you can put them on Jumbletown and somebody might offer to take them.

Freecycle, ebay. Some charities will take them if they are half decent.

Charity shops (like Oxfam, but you can check the Golden Pages to see what's available in your area) would be delighted to get them; otherwise put an ad on Buy and Sell (it's free if you post it online and it's under a certain amount of words) and say they are free to take away - useful for rented accommodation, etc. Unless you want to do a car boot sale...

If the plates are chipped you could use them as saucers for plants; chipped mugs and cups can be used as small flowerpots (great for little bulbs like miniature narcissus, cyclamen or snowdrop).

Only if they are of saleable quality. Article in the Irish Times recently about one of the Oxfam furniture shops, they made it clear they will reject anything that is not saleable as they can't afford to pay for disposal.
