Occupational Medical

Does anyone know where you can get information on an occupational medical. I have SLE Lupus, and I have been advised that there is no point in looking to move jobs as I would fail the medical. Is this the case?

Many companies do not require medicals.

The whole point of an occupational medical is to check that you are fit enough to do the job that you've applied for. If you are fit enough, having lupus won't necessarily mean that you won't get the job, it all depends on the demands of the job. If it's any consolation to you, I work with at least two people with lupus; it didn't stop them getting the job.

A medical may also be required for death in service benefit/life assurance, permanent health insurance etc. provided as part of the benefits package. Of course I presume that you could always decline the benefits and thereby avoid the medical if you chose?

While this is correct in theory, it doesn't always work this way in practice. Pre-employment medicals are often done by a local GP, rather than a specialist in occupational health. Doctors are often not briefed on the requirements for the job, and will often use questionnaires which ask all-encompassing questions designed to highlight any medical issues, regardless of relevance.

The OP has a legal right not to be discriminated against on grounds of his medical condition, but that doesn't mean that it would be a straightforward issue.
