I have emigrated and am renting out my house at home, I hadn't even thought about the nppr tax but someone I know got hit for it for the last 2 years, I have only started renting mine out in January of this year so it won't be that big anyway even with penalties, just wondering are they tracking this through the prtb or where are they getting the info??

I guess it would come to a head if/when the property is sold/changes ownership? ....in which case, if it's not been paid - there will be a significant build up of interest accrued.

Ultimately it's a self assessed/declared tax:

But I imagine that the local authority collecting it may have local knowledge or maybe even access to centralised info that informs who they unilaterally approach for it?

Local Authority have access to all PRTB data. This was confirmed to me by a friend in Revenue who also confirmed they have access to both PRTB and NPPR data.

The interest is really high at €20 per month. Sounds small but missing a single year means you owe €200+€240...it adds up really really fast!

We got caught by being a year behind without realising it...an expensive lesson to learn!
