Northern Rock bailed out by Bank of England

Great question! In my opinion nothing... You just get your interest at the end of the year
No - dealt with already above. If you close your account and are on annual interest then the closing balance includes any interest accrued on a pro-rate basis (i.e. you don't lose out). If you withdraw some of the balance then you get the interest earned on any money in the account at any time over the year.

still cannot get through to either dublin phone numbers or online........

Just got through and withdrew money but kept account open thanks for the number posted here

The guy seemed cool enough about the situation

Will see how things pan out and see if I want to go with them or keep with Anglo & Rabo

has anyone actually seen the transfer of their money into the nominated account. I withdrew all but 1k at 1.30 and paid the €25 for same day transfer this morning but it hasnt gone into my bank account yet.

I thought that same day transfers had to be executed before noon or 11AM or something like that?

George Hook is covering it in a few minutes on Newstalk, after the ads.

Just got through by constantly calling the 01 602 0324 number even though I rang and left a message at 7.15am!

It seems very much like a 'herd mentality' to me and I normally resist such but this time I lost my nerve and withdrew the lot.The money will be in my nominated account after close of business on Thursday.

The staff member I spoke to was very polite and helpful and I was so reluctant to withdraw my money. In fairness to NR, this could, and probably will, happen to other banks. Has anyone got any suggestions for a new 'home' for their cash? Apart from the first 10K in Rabo Direct, Anglo Irish seems to be the next best - are they as exposed as NR to interbank borrowing?

Why will it take 4+ working days for this to happen?

First Active eSavings €15K or less @ 5.22% gross CAR (above that it's 4.07% gross CAR on the lot)? But read the long thread on this before you do anything!

Good question Yorky! I was wondering the same myself.

There are mixed reviews on the First Active on-line offer. I called into the branch in Swords hoping to clarify some queries on askaboutmoney and they refused to answer any questions... even though I joked about having a security van hired to carry my dosh. They must have had other inquiries today of all days! Marketing opportunity missed.

The great thing about NR, besides the rate, was the online EFT transaction facility. Let's hope that they are taken over by a bank with a more diversified asset base and all us lemmings can scramble back up the cliff!:)

got through on the 01 4806050 number, transfer will be made to my nominated account by monday evening.

In my experience it does take that long to get the money out by regular (not next day) electronic transfer.

Perhaps it's quicker for people with AIB accounts? Someone mentioned on the First Active eSavings thread that all transfers out of NR go via AIB.

I was interested as to whether or not the money would show up in people's accounts today or not.

Post if anyone recieves it.

got through on the 1850 number but they were unable to tell me if the transfer had been made. will have to wait until BOI update 365 to see if I still have my money

So all this mess is your fault for not leaving your money there :)

:D I wish I could be so rich to generate these chains-effects!:D

I am near all the NR savers at the moment... And I hope NR won't collapse...:( I always found them very nice and friendly although I found their web-site quite disappointing...

This is exactly what Warren Buffet was talking about - Mr. Market!I just bought a load of NR shares (just before they started to rise :-))) ).NR will probably be taken over and these prices (5.00) are "rock" bottom. I'm going to make a killing thanks to investor fears.FYI I do have money in NR but have no intention of withdrawing it. If the BOE refused to bailout NR then I would be sweating blood, but they did, so there's no problems - just people's fear help making me rich :-)
How much of a killing did you make today then?

You may find logon times for your online accounts are longer than usual.
We apologise for this but please be patient, we can assure you that we will be able to deal with your transaction.

This now appears on the website. Don't know about everyone else but I'm sleeping easier :p

This will not be the last financial institution affected in UK or Europe. The problem is systemic and the banks are in a fix about London Interbank Offered Rates to each other - it's index is rising. Expect further casualties in the crisis - some startling ones expectantly? I would be careful on the liquidity of a few of UK financials but it would be unfair to name and probably be defamatory and libellous.
